Hostelling International Churchill Beluga Whale Tours

Starting July 5 - August 28 2010, the Great Canadian Travel Company will be offering Beluga Whale Tours every Monday and Saturday with a special rate for any Hostelling International Members.

Here is an itinerary of your time:

Day 1: Arrive in Winnipeg and transfer on your own to the Hostelling International Winnipeg Downtowner.  Located in the heart of Winnipeg’s vibrant core, this hostel is close to city’s finest attractions including the Forks “meeting place”, the award-winning Manitoba Museum and the dynamic Exchange District.

Day 2: Board VIA Rail for your northbound journey. Enjoy the ever-changing landscape as you travel through southern prairieland, boreal forest and sub-Arctic tundra.

Day 3: On board the train.

Day 4: Arrive in Churchill, located on the shores of Hudson Bay. Walk the short distance to the Tundra Inn. As your room may not be available until later today, you may leave your luggage at reception and set off to explore the town. A Tundra Buggy® Tour has been arranged this afternoon, allowing a rare opportunity to travel across the Wildlife Management Area in this giant vehicle. You may spot Ptarmigan, Arctic Fox, Snowy Owl, and possibly even Caribou.

Day 5: You will be picked up at your hotel this morning for a guided Town and Area Tour. Visit Cape Merry, the Port of Churchill and the renowned “Polar Bear Jail”. The remainder of the day offers free time to visit the Parks Canada display and sample a pastry at famous Gypsy Bakery. The Eskimo Museum is a must-see, housing the world’s largest collection of Inuit artifacts.

Day 6:  Enjoy a three-hour boat tour to view the Beluga Whales. These magnificent, playful creatures migrate by the thousands through the warm waters of the Churchill River, making it the world’s most accessible population. The boats are equipped with on board hydrophones that magnify the vocalizations of these “sea canaries”. An interpretive tour at the historic Fort Prince of Wales is included. You will have free time to shop for souvenirs before heading to the train station for your departure.

Day 7: Relax as you travel south to Winnipeg, reflecting on your time in the Canadian north!

Day 8: On board the train.

Day 9: Arrive in Winnipeg this afternoon.  Overnight accommodation has been arranged for you once again at the Winnipeg Downtowner.  Ask the staff about nearby attractions and restaurant recommendations.

Day 10: Your tour concludes upon check-out this morning.
